Textron Systems Awards Saft $2.2m Contract to Deliver Universal Ground Control Station Lithium-Ion Batteries

Saft announced that it was awarded a multi-million dollar contract from Textron Systems for lithium-ion batteries to power Universal Ground Control Stations. Under this $2.2 million contract, Saft will deliver 92 integrated charger batteries. These lithium ion batteries, more commonly known as Integrated Charger Batteries (ICBs), will be used to provide back-up power to control unmanned aerial systems (UAS) stations.

These ICBs will be able to deliver 100 amps or hours while remaining lightweight. In this fashion, the overall size of the battery required for the system will decrease.

Alex Bynum, the Director of Sales for Saft’s U.S. Space and Defense Division, gave his take on the contract:

“This follow-on contract symbolizes a maturing relationship with an established industry leader and validates Saft’s heritage of delivering complete energy storage systems tailored to our customer’s specifications.”

Bynum also commented on potential future uses of the ICB: “We look forward to enabling continued demonstration of the ICB’s performance for a range of field-critical applications.”

Textron System first gave Saft an ICB contract in 2010. During that time, the ICB was also being used on a wide variety of applications.

Wayne Prender, the Vice President of Textron Systems Unmanned Systems, commended Saft on their work:
