The US Navy awarded iRobot a contract worth $4 million for 110 FirstLook robots. Deliveries under this $4m contract are expected to be completed by February next year. iRobot's 110 FirstLook is a compact and expandable robot designed to offer immediate situational awareness and to perform persistent observation while also capable of investigating and manipulating dangerous and hazardous materials.
Tom Frost, senior vice president and general manager of iRobot's Defense & Security business unit, proudly stated,
"iRobot is pleased to provide these state-of-the-art robots to the U.S. Navy as they will help to address a wide variety of missions. FirstLook is light enough and rugged enough to be thrown through a window or down a flight of stairs, and its capabilities are expandable with the addition of different payloads. We believe FirstLook is the most capable robot in its weight class."
iRobot declares on its website that the company
“designs and builds robots that empower people to do more. The company's home robots help people find smarter ways to clean, its defense & security robots protect those in harm's way, and its remote presence robots enable virtual presence from anywhere in the world. iRobot's robots feature proprietary technologies incorporating advanced concepts in navigation, mobility, manipulation and artificial intelligence.”
Working with the military isn’t a new endeavor for iRobot as the company has already provided more than 5,000 of its defense and security robots to armed forces and civil defense personnel worldwide. The company envisions a bold new future where the automated use of these robots will eliminate the need to put civilian lives in danger when carrying out tasks of varying levels and degrees of safety and difficulty. It is safe to say our future is in capable hands, or rather the capable and automated hands of a robot.
