Lockheed Martin Contracts Rheinmetall in $142.5M British Army Scout SV Turret Deal

Rheinmetall has secured an important order in connection with a key program within the British Ministry of Defense to produce a new generation of combat vehicles for Her Majesty’s Armed Forces. The contract will enlist Rheinmetall to equip the British Army with a new family of Scout specialist vehicles. The German-based company said it had signed a $142 million deal with prime contractor Lockheed Martin UK. The contract covers the production of the turret structure and weapon mount (TSWM) for the 245 turreted versions of the Scout SV that are being purchased out of a total of 589 units.

The Scout SV program includes six variants: Scout Reconnaissance, Protected Mobility Reconnaissance Support (PMRS), Command and Control, Engineering Reconnaissance, Repair, and Recovery. Each Scout SV platform variant will be a highly agile, tracked, medium-weight armored fighting vehicle, providing British troops with state-of-the-art best-in-class protection. Each Scout SV platform variant has extensive capabilities, including acoustic detectors, a laser warning system, a local situational awareness system, an electronic countermeasure system, a route marking system, an advanced electronic architecture, and a high performance power pack.

Rheinmetall’s extensive, longstanding experience in developing and manufacturing turret systems combined with Lockheed Martin’s experience in reconnaissance sensor systems, fire control units and guidance technology, make them one of the foremost leaders in the market for turret technology. The Scout SV is designed to replace the UK Army's existing combat reconnaissance (tracked) vehicle fleet. The Scout vehicles will enhance intelligence, surveillance, protection, target acquisition and reconnaissance capabilities, and provide a highly effective 40mm cannon to the army making it the weapon of choice for future combat operations.

The first production unit is scheduled for July 2016. The contract award will mainly benefit the Rheinmetall Defence Group's plant located in Kassel, Germany, where fabrication as well as final assembly will take place, the company stated.
