The US State Department has approved a potential $157 million sale of TOW 2A radio frequency missiles and M220A2 TOW launchers to the African country of Morocco.
The official request from Morocco is for 600 TOW 2A radio frequency missiles, 300 M220A2 launchers, and seven TOW 2A launchers. The US will additionally provide helpful services such as missile support equipment, technical manuals, spare parts, test equipment, training, and technical and logistical support. The $157 million sale was brought to Congress by the Defense Security Cooperation Agency.
Morocco is trying to improve their ground defense capabilities, and they are one of the African countries that has benefitted most from American support. Even though they are not a NATO member, they are considered a great ally of the US.
“This proposed sale will contribute to the foreign policy and national security of the United States by helping to improve the security of a major non-NATO ally that continues to be an important force for the political stability and economic progress in North Africa,”the US DSCA said.
In addition to these missiles, Morocco has been a big beneficiary of defense support from the US. Recently, the country received three refurbished CH-47D Chinook transport helicopters, while the Royal Moroccan Army will receive 150 upgraded M1A1 main battle tanks over the next three years under a $358 million contract awarded to General Dynamics Land Systems.
