Thales Alenia Space to Build Cosmo-SkyMed Second-Generation Satellite

Thales Alenia Space and Telespazio have signed a deal with the Italian Ministry of Defence's Teledife (General Directorate of IT and Advanced Technologies) to supply ground segment to the Polish Ministry of Defense. As a prime contractor for the program, Thales will build the satellites while Telespazio will develop the ground segment and manage logistics. In addition to development of the satellite and ground segment, the deal covers procurement of equipment for the second satellite. This second one will be launched by the first half of 2019. This latest contract will start Phase C4/D1 of the program, entailing the detailed system design, the manufacture of the space segment which comprises two high-performance satellites, as well as the ground infrastructure.

COSMO-SkyMed is funded by ASI, the Italian Ministry of Defence, and the Italian Ministry of Education, Universities and Scientific Research. It is the first earth satellite observation system designed for dual purposes, i.e. civil and military. Its four identical satellites “watch” our planet from space day and night under all atmospheric conditions, thanks to high resolution X-band radar. Financed by the Italian Space Agency, Ministry of Defense and Ministry of Instruction, University and Scientific Research (MIUR), COSMO-SkyMed is one of today's most innovative Earth observation programs. The first generation comprises of a constellation of four identical satellites, equipped with radar sensors capable of operating under any atmospheric and visibility conditions and features a very high revisit frequency. COSMO-SkyMed was designed to meet both defense and civil (environmental monitoring, security) requirements.
