In February 2015, the multinational consortium, EuroJet was awarded a 3-year contract by the NATO Eurofighter & Tornado Management Agency. This 3-year contract calls for the continuation of support services for the EJ200 turbofan engine that is used to power the Eurofighter Typhoon multi-role combat aircraft. This contract is the sixth operational phase contract and will cover engine support for the Typhoon Program in four core nations: Germany, Spain, Italy, and the United Kingdom.
A primary goal of the contract is for EuroJet to ensure support of the Typhoon fleets for continuous procedures and savings to advance the Future Support Concept of the EJ200. Work will be done by the four multi-national companies—EuroJet, Rolls-Royce, MTU Aero Engines, ITP, and Avio Aero—at their respective headquarters.
The EJ200 engine is primarily produced by EuroJet. The EuroJet EJ200 is a military spec turbofan that is used on the Eurofighter Typhoon. Based on the Rolls Royce XG-40, the EJ200 has a maximum thrust of 13,500 pounds, a length of 157 inches, and a diameter of 29 inches. EuroJet has delivered over 1,400 EJ200 engines in support of the Eurofighter program. Backing the fleets of six different nations, the EJ200 engine has accumulated over 500,000 engine flying hours.
EuroJet Turbo GmbH is a multi-national consortium. Based in Hallbergmoos, Germany, the consortium consists of four partner companies: Rolls-Royce of the United Kingdom, Avio of Italy, ITP of Spain, and MTU Aero Engines of Germany. The consortium was established in 1986 with the sole purpose of managing the development, production, support, maintenance, support, and sales of the EJ200 turbofan engine. Each company has their own responsibilities for the creation of each EJ200 engine. Contributions from each company include Rolls Royce’s combustion system, MTU Aero Engines compressors, Avio’s turbine and gearbox system, and ITP’s airframe such as nozzles and ducts.
